English is increasingly important for Nepali children to gain opportunities in today’s globalized world. Currently, English classes are taught in Nepali by local teachers who lack resources and training to help all students have their needs met.
This limits opportunity for growth and future success for the students in these villages. They need to learn English from speakers of English! ESL (English as a Second Language) Students often receive rote style instruction instead of having them apply the class material. With the use of games, songs, and immersion in the English language, the presence of volunteers like you will greatly improve their language skills and their lives.
Because of the great distances students trek to school, attendance rates are often much lower than they should be. This is where you, the foreign, interesting, and fun English teacher, come in. When our Trek to Teach-ers are on site, students are far more eager to learn and attendance increases significantly.
Based on the school’s need, and your compatibility you will either be teaching K-5 or 6th grade – 10th grade. You may also be asked to teach elementary math, social studies and basic science classes. Some of the villages have local preschools that you can also volunteer at during your spare time.
We will do our best to ensure that you’re adequately prepared for this work. The material you will teach will be from students’ textbooks (given to you upon arrival). Trek to Teach will provide you with 5 Skype-based lessons prior to leaving your home country to develop curriculum planning and presentation. Upon arrival in Nepal, you will have an orientation to learn about Nepal’s education system, culture, language, and best practices upon arrival to your village and school. Your task is to connect with the students and teach them in the best possible way. Do you have what it takes?
